An Omnivore alternative that keeps your library on your device
Omnivore, the open-source read-it-later app, shut down in November 2024 after its team joined ElevenLabs. Kajr is a bookmark app for iPhone and Android that keeps your library on your device, summarizes what you save, and answers questions with citations to the saves it used.

What happened to Omnivore?
In October 2024 the team behind Omnivore announced it was joining ElevenLabs to work on its ElevenReader app. The hosted service closed in November 2024, and users had roughly two weeks to export their data before it was deleted. The team said the code would stay open source.
Open source does not protect your library
Omnivore's code stayed public, but the hosted service most people used did not. What protects a library is where it is stored. Kajr's lives on your device, not on a Kajr server.
You still get a safety net. Kajr can sync your library to your own Google Drive, and you can export it to a file, an Excel spreadsheet or a Chrome bookmarks file whenever you want. No two-week export window, no waiting on a company to decide.
What Omnivore fans may want to know
Omnivore was known for highlights, notes and listening to articles read aloud. Highlights and notes are part of a Kajr library. Text-to-speech is not what Kajr is built around; if listening is your main use, look at Instapaper Premium or Readwise Reader.
If you specifically want to run an open-source server yourself, Kajr is not that. It is a mobile app with your library on your phone.
What Kajr does with a save
Each save is read on the way in: summary, key takeaways, quality score, action items and tags. Then you can ask a question across everything you have saved and see which saves the answer came from.
